JUMP TO...

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, a hormone needed to control blood sugar. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood, leading to serious health problems. It is a relentless disease that requires lifelong insulin treatment and careful monitoring of blood sugar.

The Reshape T1D Study focuses on understanding how people living with type 1 diabetes interact with and experience health services in Alberta.

Mission
To improve the healthcare experience for individuals living with
type 1 diabetes through collaborative research, focusing on mental health support, flexible and personalized care, and equitable access to essential resources and technology.

Vision
To reshape health services delivery where every individual with
type 1 diabetes receives seamless, empathetic, and accessible care that prioritizes their unique lived experiences, fosters resilience, and enhances overall well-being.

Research Design

People living with type 1 diabetes and clinicians working in type 1 diabetes care settings were engaged to co-design the research. The team collected stories across Alberta from people living with type 1 diabetes about their healthcare experiences.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. How do people living with type 1 diabetes interact with and experience healthcare in Alberta?

2. How does age at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes impact how people experience medical trauma?

3. What are the best ways to creatively communicate findings from the research to diverse audiences?

Findings & Interpretations

Our team co-developed the

Type 1 Diabetes Lived Experiences Framework
for Clinical Quality Improvement

This framework is meant to generate conversation among clinicians to take a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and patient-centered approach to the care they provide to people living with type 1 diabetes.

First & Foremost

Express appreciation that the person living with type 1 diabetes showed up to the appointment and welcome them with acceptance and recognition,

then

Ask, listen with the purpose to understand, and summarize.

CLINICAL Actions

Community Engagement

Findings were presented at multiple scientific and community meetings and workshops including:

Presentations included sharing research findings and knowledge translation tools such as our study website (ReshapeT1D.com), the Reshape T1D Art Collection, and the Reshape T1D Docuseries.

Docuseries

Our team has been filming a docuseries that showcases the experiences of being a patient or clinician involved in research, what the research is about, and our perspectives on peoples healthcare experiences with
type 1 diabetes.

The Reshape T1D Art Collection

An art collection was curated from the data that we collected from peoples stories and experiences interacting with Alberta's healthcare system for type 1 diabetes.

Media & Publications

Several news media articles have been published and scientific publications are underway!
